چکیده

The aim of this paper is to present an experimental validation of a frequency-domain approach to the solution of the lightning electromagnetic field-to-buried cable coupling equations. The coupling to the inner conductor is evaluated using the concept of cable transfer impedance. The theoretical model and relevant computer code are tested using experimental data on lightning-induced currents in buried cables carried out in 2002 and 2003 at the International Center for Lightning Research & Testing (ICLRT) at Camp Blanding, Florida where currents induced by triggered lightning events were measured at the ends of a buried coaxial cable, both in the shield and in the inner cable conductors. Reasonably good agreement has been found between numerical simulations and recorded waveforms. In particular, the early-time response of the cable and the peak value of the induced currents were generally well reproduced by the simulations. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Due to the ever-increasing use of Distributed Generations (DGs), and special attentions toward wind power plants in recent years, this research investigates the wind plants from the viewpoint of lightning protection. In comparison to all other type of generators connected to the electric power systems, wind turbine generators are placed in areas which are more likely to be stricken by lightning...

An evaluation of the performance characteristics of the U.S. National Lightning Detection Network in Florida using rocket-triggered lightning

[1] The performance characteristics of the U.S. National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) were evaluated using rocket-triggered lightning data, acquired in the summers of 2001–2003 at the International Center for Lightning Research and Testing (ICLRT), at Camp Blanding, Florida. During the 3-year period, 37 flashes, containing a total of 159 (158 negative and 1 positive) strokes, were trigger...

A comparison of channel-base currents and optical signals for rocket-triggered lightning strokes

A comparative analysis has been performed of the channel-base current and light waveforms for four rocket-triggered lightning strokes. It has been found that the current and light signals at the bottom of the channel exhibit a linear relationship (direct proportionality) in their rising portions. However, just after the peaks the linearity disappears, and the light signals usually decrease fast...

Return stroke peak current versus charge transfer in rocket‐triggered lightning

[1] We examined data on 117 return strokes in 31 rocket‐and‐wire‐triggered lightning flashes acquired during experiments conducted from 1999 through 2004 at the International Center for Lightning Research and Testing at Camp Blanding, Florida, in order to compare the peak currents of the lightning return strokes with the corresponding charges transferred during various time intervals within 1 m...

Lightning Interactions with Humans and Lifelines

Lightning is one of the fascinating phenomena exhibiting tremendous natural power. It is source of awe, curiosity, enticement, inspiration as well as fear. On average, 50 lightning strikes occur on earth in one second. Fortunately not all of them kill people, albeit 10% people fall prey to lightning annually, out of which hardly 20 to 25% die. Lightning injures victims by heat, shockwave, inten...
